BAOFENG UV-25 - Chirp Programming Followed With A First QSO/Test
Просмотров 54621 день назад
Another parcel arrived with a cool new budget radio to test out and have some fun with. This time it's another Ali Express bargain the BAOFENG UV-25. The radio is listed as Military standard and for a cheap budget price it is super cool and ticks the boxes as it looks good, feels solid and is constructed to extreme toughness reminding me of old school radios from the 80s. in short, first looks....

out walking the dogs with the UV-5R M from BAOFENG. The radio is a good receiver and also covers the air bands. I pre-programmed the memory channels using CHIRP software and it's working well for a budget radio. power output is advertised as 10w but it's more like 7 watts which is pretty cool. I like the radio especially the build quality. 73 tnx for watching.

The third time around as we look at my YAESU FT-2980 FM Mono band 2 meter Transceiver after 4 years of use. Is it really that good for the price? Well I think it's a definite yes, I have had mine for over 4 years and it is working faultlessly since owning it with no problems or stress. I'd really like to pick the brain of G4TCB at some point. "Standard valves" here in the USA are becoming utterly unavailable or else becoming PUNISHINGLY expensive for complete crap zero quality control shit from China. I mean that as no slur to the nation or people of China; they are clearly capable of making any level of quality specified by the purchaser, since they make essentially everything technology based for all of "the West" except for some pretty esoteric stuff and/or where National Security has kept certain manufacturing technologies "on shore" (more should be back on-shore for Nat. Sec. and other reasons) or where some things are getting "re-shored" for supply chain resilience reasons. But the middlemen in the business of bringing in far East "standard ham rf power valves/ tubes" like 811a, 572b, 3-500z, 8877/3cx1500a7, etc etc." are basically bringing in utterly dodgy crap (if you can get anything at all for 'new' versions of these tubes and you get killed on costs of supposed "NOS" that's generally not new and, if it's "new" may likely be counterfeit, not "old" that costs a fortune and if you are unlucky it's going to crap out mere weeks after "warranty" and if you are lucky it'll still never have combinations of performance/ reliability that "the real things" always had. During the late 90s/ early 2000s, there was a huge burst of USA ham interest in cheap ex-USSR RF power triodes but that was basically a "flash in the pan" that was over almost before it began and nobody in the USA ham sphere has done much with RF power tetrodes since the birth of the grounded grid 3-500z and the discovery that the already ancient technology 811a triodes that dated to or slightly before WWII, could be amazingly decent grounded grid RF amplifiers. I already own some Gi7bts that I want to use to repower a Tentec Centaur 811a amp (but without doing irreversible botching up to the Centaur) and I really really want to get some Gu43b tubes as a fallback plan for a really nice vintage amp that I have that runs the now cripplingly unavailable 8877 (and get the 8877 amp to be able to run as grounded grid tetrode in true tetrode configuration like a Collins 30s1, but without botching up the 8877 amp in irreversible ways. I have one 8877 used and supposedly still usable as a spare, but after the unknown life of that secondhand used 8877, I'd be dead in the water. I'm not even slightly savvy about whether or how you can or can't private message on RUclips but I'd really welcome it if someone could give me tips on best place and mode to get in touch with G4TCB - between what I see here and some reviews/reworks of amps to ex-USSR valves that he's mentioned on eham. Thx and 73. Trevor, KD1YT, Vermont, USA
Are you using 14 gauge copper wire like thnn/thwn 2?
Multi strand 2.5mm copper wire with insulation. It's electrical installation wire used for wiring power to mains electric. Works well.
Why a 1:1 balun vs a 4:1 balun?
Both work but 4:1 gives you more bands. At the time I made this I did not have a 4:1. Since then I have tried both and 4:1 is good
@@M0YKSHamRadio Cool! I'm going to make a 20 meter Delta loop antenna with 4:1 balun.also the V shape at the point will be between 7.5 and 10 ft. I'm using 7.2 m fiberglass fishing rods and 14 gauge copper thnn/thwn 2.
Does the UV10 have the display sync option that allows you to view the channel name and frequency of a channel at the same time instead of the dual a and b channel watch?
I have had a quick look and I believe it only allows either frequency or name to be displayed, not both unfortunately. The dual watch can be disabled but the frequency for the second vfo is still showing. I don't like the actual text it shows on the name option it's a bit small. The frequency read out is large and looks good.
I'm completely new to amateur radio. This was very helpful because it answered a lot of questions in a very clear way. Thank you!
Welcome to the world of amateur radio you are going to have lots of fun getting into the many aspects of the hobby. Satellite is really cool and with a small hand held beam you can do amazing things. Glad you enjoyed this and it was of use to you 👍 good luck and thank you for posting your comment.
hi , what was the antenna ????
Hi bud I used two antenna - 145 MHz innovantenna LFA X yagi 5 element and 437 Oscar sat X yagi 15 element. Both are on other videos that I made previously and also there are pictures on my RUclips community page.
Do you know how to factory reset this radio?
Yes it's in the menu settings
Good job working SO-50! What model is your transceiver? 73 Paul AA1SU
Thanks Paul it's a FT-847 I have had it a long time it's very good
Very nice
Thanks bud hope I catch u soon it's been a while
Hi Simon, where did you purchase your antennas from ?? 73's.... G0JWM
@Lazyonics hello. I got the 437 Oscar sat X beam from waters and stanton about 20 years ago. The 145 LFA X Yagi is from Innovantenna UK and was recent about 2 years ago. They have a good range and are extremely well constructed. Hope that helps 73

M0YKS K4TOE can you explain your setup for base operations? I know you built your antennas but what type of rotor do you use horizontal and vertical?
Hello and thanks for watching. My rotator is a YAESU G5500 azimuth and elevation control. It is interfaced with my windows pc which has software Satpc32 steering the antenna at the satellite 🛰️
Go to 9:40 and 10:07 for the external CAT interface.
Hi there, May I ask you if the SWR is good on the lower part (~144.174 MHz FT8) of the band? Kind regards
Hello yes it works fine across the whole band. Low swr 👍
@@M0YKSHamRadio Thank you very much and also for the great videos!
Mine cost £18 off Amazon, work very well if coupled to a decent antenna
You got it for a good price there bob. Have a good Fathers day buddy

Nice one Chris I am very happy with it so far. Cheers bud 73
Hey bro! They did a good job designing that one. Looks good. That's a huge antenna. Chirp is programmed/owned by a ham here in Portland. I hope all is well with you, your ladies, and the two pooches. We are doing well here. Will tell my ladies, and the lads at the shop hi for you and your ladies. Talk with soon. 73...
Hello Pat, yes it's a very well constructed radio that's for sure. They seem to be getting better and better (every week) lol there are new ones almost every day 😁. I remember you mentioning the chirp dude previously 👍. Pass on the M0YKS Yo's and hugs and catch up with you later. 73 tnx
That 10W Baofeng is a beast! My iCom IC-A24 just quit, so I'll have to rebuild the battery. I wonder if Baofeng makes a cheap air-band radio?🤔
The UV-5R M is airband and works great as well as amateur bands. Very reasonable as well. This new beast is very cool I can't wait to get out properly and see how it goes. It isn't made for AIR bands but can RX on the Air frequency on AM but to be fair the Quensheng UV K5 & K6 are very good for airband and even less money. I have and like both but for a few dollars extra the BAOFENG are built better as in if you drop it the Quensheng scratches easy and the BAOFENG just dints the floor. Sorry to hear your ICOM is taking time out. You will most likely get it fixed up I suspect 😁👍
The Baofengs are not allowed in my Country for one good Reason "their dirty Signal they producing"
Shame for you not being able to get one. I love how everyone plugs a Chinese radio into a Chinese spectrum analyser and get all excited thinking they have discovered something very serious and world ending 😂. What with the QRP and a mini antenna people are expecting another episode of northern lights or possibly HAARP 😂. It makes me laugh at least. Have a good one stay legal 😉👌
I love this cheeky radio and tbh the harmonics aren’t that bad through its antenna so I’m assuming it has some sort of band pass filter in it. Lovely clean RX audio on them too.
Only got it this evening but it's very nice indeed. I really like the look and size and like you said it has brilliant RX audio. It's pretty much similar to a mobile radio rather than typical hand held with it's size, pwr and speaker quality. I already happy with the purchase and not even used it properly. 😁👍 Thanks for your info on this I appreciate it and looking forward to getting out properly with it. Cheers bud. 73

Hi Simon. As someone whom has returned back to amateur radio after a break of 10 to 15 years, I have to say how disappointed I am at the lack of activity there is in this area on VHF and UHF these days. Like you I have amassed a number of the cheap handhelds, such as Baofeng, Anysecu, Radtel, Quansheng, etc, and while they are cheap I’ve yet to find one that comes anywhere close to the -40dB harmonic OFCOM requirement. The worst so far is a Quansheng K5 where the second harmonic is only -7dB down from the fundamental on VHF with the example I have. On the plus side it was great to work you again, after many, many years, the other month on 2m. DE G0NIG (Nidge)
I'll give ya a shout on 20metre if ya about on a Sunday morning. I'm in Newark
Nice one man yes I am usually on Sunday morning it would be cool to work each other 👍
Cheap and nasty radio. Made for people who can't afford a yeasu
Good job I can afford and have the top end YAESU but still I don't agree with you. I would say made cheap to flood the market and take over the world more likely.
I still use the ft2500m. Workhorse other than the microphone.
Cool.. I still have a FT-2600m also replaced it's mic but still works good with 60w out. I use it at my holiday cabin had it 20 years. Great radio
It’s crazy how they can keep pumping these out. I just checked Amazon and I can get it for $26usd shipped. Thanks Simon 73!
I agree totally they are too cheap that you have to try one for sure. The trouble is they make a new one every week it seems and I can't resist buying lol.
@@M0YKSHamRadio That is exactly the problem! LOL 73 Simon!
Sounds pretty good, would be worth the money just for airband
Hey bro yes definitely a good receiver I like listening to the air bands and it is good on Sat and ISS as well

Great to see you going back to basics. People overlook how powerful and useful these radios are. Just a FM handheld you can work the space station make friends. You can work over 100 miles I sure have done 73 great work.
Hi Chris I must admit when I am not with you on RUclips I like messing with this kind of gear. Some evenings are tied up playing big radio but many times I'm having just as much fun with these little beauts. Catch you later 😁
Brill little radios Simon and you will be amazed at the 25 when you try it. Thanks for the video
Hi bro yes I am getting quite excited about the UV 25. It will be in my sight sometime this week. Another great excuse to get back outside 😁👍 73 tnx
So, you go out for a walk with a Beofeng and suddenly your winning the 2m contest - Amazing! That's a nice green area with the trees and the hills - I like it! And why is there a statue of you deep in the forest - LOL? Have a great day Simon!
Lol yes 1st place for sure 😁. It's across the valley on the opposite hill from my Qth. The place I called CQ is Druids Alter a rock with a view where ancient sacrificial rituals took place. There are quite a few stone circles and druid type rock remains local. This one is found in Bingley West Yorkshire. As for the woodland statue I forgot to tell you I am the Lord of the area around here lol. 😁
@@M0YKSHamRadio Okay, 'Lord Simon' - LOL. See you next time!
Ok for the money Simon I've got one..
Yes I think the same thing. Very good for little change 👌£
Awesome little radio!! I love mine and use it a lot , the only complaint i have is the VFO knob is way too easy to turn but other than that its an excellent radio
Yes I guess it is quite easy to knock onto the neighboring frequency/channel when accidentally touching the vfo. Great radio for real with no complaints for sure. Have a good afternoon bro 73
@M0YKSHamRadio I will probably never part with mine, it was my first, new VHF radio. They are no Icom 2730A but for a single band radio I don't think you can touch them in quality unless you wanna drop another $100.. The receiver is great and I always get great signal reports..I regularly check into nets 60 miles away with no trouble through a Diamond X300-A

greetings, needs some advise here. i have a 5btv, with High swr on all bands. question i have ,, i set the lenghts based on the hustler measurements with ground radials, so now should i shorten the lengths starting from 10meter trap to get lower swr?
Hello yes start by tuning the bottom 10m as you said then 15, and then 20m. By the time you get to 40m the length will be close to resonant
Great story and information Simon, nice one👍. Finally fitted my Mini 70 pre-amp on Monday, RX has been improved massively, catch you soon 73s📡
